Biography

Yuima Nakazato

Yuima Nakazato
Fashion designer, artist

Born in 1985. With artists as parents, he was exposed to various forms of expression from a very young age. He taught himself how to sew clothes, and after graduating from high school, left Japan for Europe. He became the youngest Japanese individual to graduate from the Fashion Department of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp  in Belgium. His graduation collection from the school won numerous European awards. In 2009, he established his own fashion brand, YUIMA NAKAZATO. He was chosen as one of the official guest designers of Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week 2016 AW season. For the first time in 12 years, he became the second of only two Japanese designers, following Hanae Mori, to be on the official Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week calendar. In 2017, he won the Mainichi Fashion Grand Prix Shiseido Award for the Best New Designer of the Year (Newcomer Award) and Honorary Mention  in the Ars Electronica international science, technology and arts STARTS Prize.

Feelings Toward Fashion and Brand Philosophy

“Eventually, each and every garment will be unique and different.”

This is the future that YUIMA NAKAZATO envisions for humankind. That a custom-designed garment enriches the spirt of the person who wears it is a philosophy that arose from the designer’s real-life experience.

YUIMA NAKAZATO mobilizes the knowledge of a wide-range of genres, such as engineering, architecture and art, using 3D printers and other digital fabrication methods in his monozukuri. He repeats various experimentation and research, from the development of textiles to new manufacturing methods of clothing, to continually stretch the possibilities of garments.

Favorite YKK Product

EXCELLA® is his favorite. Its functionality as a zipper, the way it opens and closes, is of course wonderful, but more than that there is its beauty. The sturdy, premium texture of the metal parts makes it possible to use the zipper ornamentally.

He also likes that there are extensive variations to choose from, such as in surface color  and polish, to match the concept of his particular design.

EXCELLA® is the highest quality metal zipper with fully polished elements.

Introduction of Item Utilizing Zippers

This is a work of his that won the YKK Award at the ITS#EIGHT, the International Talent Support design competition held in Italy. The title of the piece is Round Shoes O. A flat circle folds into a pair of three-dimensional boots when pieces are connected using zippers. It was a design inspired by the Japanese kimono and origami.

This is a unique method in which the flat piece cannot change into a three-dimensional form without zippers. The design was recognized for expanding the possibilities of zippers. EXCELLA® zippers are used in this work.

Future Plans

While keeping his main focus on fashion, YUIMA NAKAZATO also defines the “clothing” portion of the basic needs of life—food, clothing and shelter—in an expanded sense. He believes that the evolution of clothing contains the potential of enriching the future lives of humankind.

Going forward, he will continue research and development that integrate diverse traditions with technology and, through clothing, pursue designs that will help resolve global challenges. At the same time, he will present his collections, exhibit works in different countries, and propose new products to communicate the evolution of clothing.
